Description
Sweet layered pastry with nuts and honey syrup, a special treat for Iftar.
Ingredients
- 1 package phyllo dough, thawed
- 3 cups mixed nuts (walnuts, pistachios, almonds), finely chopped
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp ground cardamom
- 1 cup butter, melted
- For the syrup:
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup water
- 1/2 cup honey
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 1 strip lemon peel
- 1 tsp rose water or orange blossom water
Instructions
- 1Preheat oven to 175°C (350°F).
- 2Mix chopped nuts with cinnamon and cardamom.
- 3Brush a 9x13 inch baking dish with melted butter.
- 4Lay 8 sheets of phyllo in the dish, brushing each with butter.
- 5Sprinkle 1/3 of the nut mixture over the phyllo.
- 6Layer 4 more sheets of phyllo, brushing each with butter.
- 7Sprinkle another 1/3 of the nut mixture.
- 8Repeat with 4 more sheets and the remaining nuts.
- 9Top with 8 sheets of phyllo, brushing each with butter.
- 10Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond shapes.
- 11Bake for 50 minutes until golden and crisp.
- 12Meanwhile, make the syrup by combining sugar, water, honey, cinnamon stick, and lemon peel in a saucepan.
- 13Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes.
- 14Remove from heat, add rose water, and let cool.
- 15Pour the cooled syrup over the hot baklava right out of the oven.
- 16Let baklava cool completely, allowing it to absorb the syrup.
- 17Serve at room temperature.
