Description

Sweet layered pastry with nuts and honey syrup, a special treat for Iftar.

Ingredients

  • 1 package phyllo dough, thawed
  • 3 cups mixed nuts (walnuts, pistachios, almonds), finely chopped
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground cardamom
  • 1 cup butter, melted
  • For the syrup:
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 strip lemon peel
  • 1 tsp rose water or orange blossom water

Instructions

    Preheat oven to 175°C (350°F).

    Mix chopped nuts with cinnamon and cardamom.

    Brush a 9x13 inch baking dish with melted butter.

    Lay 8 sheets of phyllo in the dish, brushing each with butter.

    Sprinkle 1/3 of the nut mixture over the phyllo.

    Layer 4 more sheets of phyllo, brushing each with butter.

    Sprinkle another 1/3 of the nut mixture.

    Repeat with 4 more sheets and the remaining nuts.

    Top with 8 sheets of phyllo, brushing each with butter.

    Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond shapes.

    Bake for 50 minutes until golden and crisp.

    Meanwhile, make the syrup by combining sugar, water, honey, cinnamon stick, and lemon peel in a saucepan.

    Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes.

    Remove from heat, add rose water, and let cool.

    Pour the cooled syrup over the hot baklava right out of the oven.

    Let baklava cool completely, allowing it to absorb the syrup.
